John T. Murphy

My area of interest is, broadly, technology and the social sciences. Within social science I focus mainly on Anthropology and especially Archaeology; by 'technology' I include databases, simulation models and visualization tools, as well as specialized analysis tools like Geographic Information Systems and Social Network Analysis. These tools have opened doors for new kinds of research; I am interested in how researchers use them, and how they shape the research that is done with them. Ultimately I am also interested in how the tools can impact people's lives: what new kinds of things can be known using these tools, and to what purposes this new knowledge can (or should) be put. Under this broad topic I focus on:

  • Computational Social Science
  • Agent-Based Modeling
  • Epistemology and ontology of models and modeling
  • History and philosophy of science
  • Complexity and Complex Adaptive Systems
  • The construction of the body of social science knowledge
  • Archaeological Systematics and Data Management
  • Simulation modeling of Complex Adaptive Systems
  • Relational Database Theory
